Permits & Registration

Faculty/Staff and students

All faculty/staff and students parking a vehicle on UNL-controlled property, are required to register that vehicle with UNL Parking and Transit Services and have a valid University of Nebraska Parking Permit. Permits are not required at meters and time-controlled zones; however, the vehicle still needs to be registered at Parking and Transit Services.

University of Nebraska faculty, staff and students who are primarily assigned to the UNL campus must purchase a permit from UNL's Parking and Transit Services Office and may not use permits from other campuses.

Registering your vehicle

To register your vehicle and obtain a parking permit, you will need to present the following at UNL Parking and Transit Services:

  • Completed UNL parking permit application.
  • University Identification Card.
  • Verification of on-campus residency for UNL Resident Students.
  • Appropriate fee or signed payroll deduction form after payment of any outstanding citations.
  • Current state vehicle registration certificate (only if requested).

Purchase of a new parking permit (e.g., for the new academic year) does not forgive outstanding citations.

Failure to purchase a parking permit does not relieve the faculty/staff or students of the responsibility to register any vehicle parked on University of Nebraska-controlled property.

If you change your registration (vehicle, license plates, name, or address), you will need to report these changes directly to UNL Parking and Transit Services within 30 calendar days. This may be accomplished by phone, fax, email.

All valid parking permits are issued solely by UNL Parking and Transit Services and may not be resold.

As part of the process of obtaining a permit, you are required to complete a registration form showing all vehicles to be used with that permit.

In case of mechanical failure or vehicle repair, and a valid parking permit has been previously purchased, the client will need to notify the Office of Parking and Transit Services in person of the conditions that have stimulated the request for variation from the normal purchasing of a daily parking hangtag prior to parking on campus.

Non-reserved permit parking

Non-reserved permit parking is based on availability and does not guarantee the permit holder a parking space.

Rates, times, and signage

All rates, times and signage must be observed at each parking location.

Hang tags

Hangtags must be suspended, facing the front of the vehicle, from your rearview mirror or other device so as to be displayed in an equivalent manner. You may move the hangtag from one registered vehicle to another registered vehicle. If you have a sticker instead of a hangtag, place the sticker on the lower right hand corner of your windshield (passenger's side). Stickers are available only for special vehicles.

Special Parking Permits

There are Special Parking Permits issued by UNL Parking and Transit Services to individuals requiring Handicapped, Medical, and Vendor/Contractor parking.

Women whose medical condition during pregnancy requires a closer parking space as a matter of accommodation, should contact the Parking and Transit Services Office at 472-1800.

  • Handicapped Permits
Individuals with physical disabilities who have a UNL standard parking permit may obtain a permit valid for use in another area or an area reserved for the exclusive use of handicapped persons by presenting UNL Parking and Transit Services a current State handicapped permit authorization. For periods of less than six months, a letter of verification from a physician is required; the State handicapped permit is not needed. Short-term arrangements can also be made. These permits allow parking in any regular stall, but not in a reserved stall. If handicapped stalls are continually full, please contact Parking and Transit Services.
  • Vendor/Contractor Permits
Vehicles parked on campus by vendor/contractors doing business with the University must display a Vendor/Contractor Permit. Misuse of this permit will result in confiscation of the permit and forfeiture of parking privileges.
  • Emeriti Faculty Parking
Emeriti faculty will be issued a regular non-reserved parking permit at no charge upon their retirement from UNL.
  • Retired Faculty/Staff Eligibility
Effective July 1, 2006, no free parking permits will be issued to retired non-Emeriti faculty or staff. Retired faculty or staff that received a free parking 2005-06 permit will be grandfathered for 10 years and will continue to receive a regular non-reserved parking permit at no charge for a maximum of 10 years after the date of their retirement. The retiree must be on a non-active status with regards to employment at the University. Failure to renew the permit in any one year will invalidate their eligibility.
    Permit Use
    • The permit is non-transferable. It must be used by the individual it is issued. If the permit is used by a spouse, family member or anyone else the permit will be revoked and the individual will forfeit renewal eligibility.
    • Emeriti faculty can purchase a reserved parking permit at a $20 per month discount from the regular reserved permit cost. Availability of reserved parking will be based on demand of active faculty or staff members.

Refunds

It is possible to receive a refund on all prepaid reserved, annual, or semester permits when you turn in your parking permit. The amount of the refund is the cost of the permit, less the cost per month from the effective date or purchase date (whichever is later), and less any unpaid citations or unpaid balances.

If you are on the payroll deduction plan, your cancellation and return of the issued permit will result in discontinuance of your deduction. The unpaid balance will represent your refund. If a bus pass was issued with your parking permit, both items must be returned to receive a full refund.

Returned Check Policy

License plate number(s) of individuals who stop payment on checks used to pay UNL Parking fees or fines, or who write insufficient funds checks for UNL Parking fees or penalties will automatically be placed on the impoundment list. The individual's transcripts, diploma, registration, and/or vehicle permit renewal may be held. The individual will be required to pay with cash or a money order to satisfy the amount of the check and any additional violation penalties or fees.

Departmental (Service/Delivery) Permit Policy

Departmental Service Permits are valid in the following University parking areas only if placed in a vehicle with a valid University of Nebraska-Lincoln parking permit: City Campus Lot A and any Service and Delivery or Administrative Service Stall, East Campus Area A, and any Service and Delivery or Administrative Service Stall. Departmental Service Permits are also valid in those spaces marked specifically for the use of the department. Departmental permits are issued strictly for business purposes and are not intended to support routine faculty, staff and student parking needs. If this permit is misused it will be confiscated by the University Parking and Transit Services Department. Please return this permit to the Department Chairperson each day when not in use. Departmental permits may not be used with Perimeter Permits.

Departmental Guest Permits

Departmental Guest Permits are issued to UNL departments for their visitors parking needs. These permits are issued monthly to all UNL departments requesting this service. Each permit is number consecutively, and stamped with the month that they are valid, (1 for Jan., 2 for Feb., etc.). Departments that frequently request this service are issued guest permits for three months at a time. This eliminates the department having to order every month. If you use all of the guest permits for a particular month, or have specific questions regarding the use of these permits please contact Ron Fuller at 472-8436

Requirements

  • These permits are not to be issued to students, staff, faculty, or vendors doing business with, working, or going to school at the University of Nebraska.
  • These permits can be issued to guest speakers, unexpected guest that drop in, or small groups, 4 or less, they are not to be used for meetings, seminars, conferences, and/or workshops, (a special conference permit can be issued for this type of event).
  • There should be only one person responsible for the issuance of these permits within each department. A log sheet along with the number of permits requested will be mailed to that department. The person responsible for issuing the permits will also be responsible for logging each permit used, even if that permit has been voided, due to an error. The log sheet and any extra, and/or voided permits will need to be returned to this office, Parking & Transit Services 1931 Antelope Valley Parkway 0681 at the beginning of the following month.
  • For ordering purposes, you should give at least a two weeks advance notice that you will require additional permits for the upcoming months, that doesnt mean that we will not help out if an emergency arises.
  • Please inform the guest of the areas where the permit is valid, or suggest to them that they read the back of the permit.
  • If you make a mistake while issuing a guest permit please DO NOT USE THAT PERMIT. Please issue another permit instead. The use of an altered/counterfeit permit will result in vehicle impoundment.
  • The guest permits are NOT valid in metered parking areas. Please inform your guest that they are responsible for paying the meter.
  • Do not write Any for the permit area. Departmental guest permits are only valid in non-reserved areas excluding resident hall parking lots. (Area A or Area C)
