Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sell or give my permit to someone else?

No. Parking permits are non-transferable and may not be sold, exchanged, or given to anyone other than UNL Parking and Transit Services.
If you add another person’s vehicle to your permit, you’ll be responsible for any tickets that vehicle receives and may be subject to “Misuse of Permit” citations.

If you have a 50/50 permit, please contact the 50/50 leasing office for specific details.

I only come to campus occasionally. What’s the best permit for me?

UNL offers Virtual Flex Pack for employees, which include 10 one-day permits.
UNL offers Occasional Use Permit Packets for students, which includes 10 one-day virtual permits. Please note that Virtual Flex Permits are not valid during events such as (but not but not limited to) home football games, home volleyball games, concerts. Etc.
Please note that student occasional use permit packets (for area Cs) are only sold when C permits are available. If C permits are sold out, student OC packets will not be sold.
For same-day parking, we recommend buying in-person instead of ordering online.

I moved dorms/apartments and need a different permit. What should I do?

Call the Parking Office at 402-472-1800 to check if the desired lot is available.

  • If it is, you may exchange your permit in our office.
  • If it’s full, we can add you to a waitlist.

Bring your event sticker (if you have one) when exchanging.

I’m graduating in December. Can I get a one-semester permit?

UNL does not offer single-semester permits.
Purchase a 9-month permit, then return it for a partial refund.

I’m an Emeritus professor. How do I get my emeriti permit?

Emeriti faculty receive a non-reserved parking permit at no charge upon retirement.
It must be renewed annually, either online at unl.aimsparking.com or in person.

Can I park in surface lots if I have a garage permit?

During core hours (7:30 AM – 3:00 PM), you must park in your assigned garage when parking on City Campus.
After 3 PM, select additional parking areas open for UNL parking permit holder use.

See the Expanded Parking Hours Map at the bottom of Student Parking Options.

Do I need a UNL permit if I have a “Service & Delivery” or state-issued handicap placard?

Yes, in most cases.

  • Service & Delivery permits are for short-term university business and must be used with a valid UNL permit.
  • Accessible parking spaces on campus also require a UNL-issued permit if you are affiliated with the university.

Visitors (non-affiliated) with a state handicap placard may use non-reserved accessible spaces without a UNL permit.

Do motorcycles need permits?
  • Motorcycles parked in motorcycle-only areas: No permit required (but registration is).
  • Motorcycles parked in vehicle lots: Must have a valid permit for that lot.

Garage parking is not allowed for motorcycles.

What is an event sticker, and do I need one?

Event stickers show that you have a valid UNL permit for events (e.g., Lied Center, Devaney Sports Center, football games) and are only issued to UNL students, faculty and staff; other types of permit holders are required to pay for event parking.

  • Only annual or 9-month permits qualify.

Stickers are reusable and can be moved between registered vehicles

Can I use my UNK/UNO/UNMC/NIC permit at UNL?

UNL offers daily (not overnight) reciprocal parking for business or educational purposes only and it must be requested at least 48 hours in advance through your home campus. Please note that reciprocal permits are not valid until a confirmation of processing email has been received. This may take longer than 48 hours, as they are processed in the order they are received.

Can I cancel my permit over the phone?

No.
You can cancel by emailing Parking and Transit Services or through the parking portal.

If you have an event sticker, return it or send a photo of it cut in half to process your cancellation

Can my department buy a permit for an employee or student?

No. Departments may not use university funds to purchase personal permits.
They may buy permits only for non-affiliated event participants, non-affiliated research participants, vendors, or visitors.
Departmental guest permits are available for eligible guests. For more information regarding departmental guest permits, please contact our office at 402-472-1800.

I’m driving a rental car. Do I need to register it?

Yes. All vehicles driven by UNL students, faculty, staff or affiliates driving a rental vehicle must be registered, even short-term rentals; those that have a valid parking permit must substitute or add the vehicle to their UNL parking permit.

Can I share my permit with a friend or roommate?

No. Permits are assigned to one person and cannot be shared.
If multiple family vehicles are linked to your permit, only one may be parked on campus at a time.

Is my permit valid at meters?

No. A UNL permit is never valid in an unpaid metered stall during times of meter enforcement. Payment is required when meters are enforced.

The meter wasn’t working. Can I park there for free?

No. You must use the Passport app to pay when a meter is out of order or park at a different meter.

Report meter issues to 402-472-8461.

Passport wouldn’t load, and I got a ticket. What now?

If the app doesn’t load, you must pay with quarters.
If neither option works, you cannot park there.

Why doesn’t the meter change when I pay via Passport?

The app and meter do not sync. Check your remaining time in the Passport app.

I paid all day but left and lost my spot. Can I get a refund?

No refunds are issued for leaving early.
However, if you paid for a zone, you may move to any open stall within that same zone during your active session

When are meters enforced?

Meters are enforced:

  • Mon–Fri: 7 AM – 7:30 PM
  • Sat: 7 AM – 12 PM (when UNL is open)

Please note that some Passport zones are enforced differently than meters. Please review signage in each Passport zone to determine permissible times.

When is parking enforced?

UNL parking facilities require a valid permit 24/7, year-round, except for meters and time-controlled zones.

A campus staff member said I could park somewhere—why did I get a ticket?

Only Parking and Transit Services may authorize parking locations.
Always confirm rules at Parking Rules & Regulations.

My car was towed. What do I need to do to get my car?

If you are a parking permit holder, begin by logging into your campus Parking Portal account and pay any pending tickets.https://unl.aimsparking.com/

Contact Capitol Towing at 402-475-7676 (101 Charleston Street) for an update on your vehicle. They can provide the steps and fee payment needed to release your vehicle.

If you are not a permit holder, directly contact Capitol Towing for necessary steps to retrieve your vehicle.

I parked in a visitor spot as a student/faculty/staff/affiliate/vendor. Why was I ticketed?

Visitor and guest stalls are for non-affiliated visitors only.
Students, faculty, staff, affiliates, and vendors must park in regular permitted or metered areas.

I don’t agree with my ticket. How can I appeal?

Appeals must be submitted online through the parking portal with documentation showing why the occurrence was beyond the customer’s control or that the ticket was issued in error.

Appeals are for ticket disputes, not for policy disagreements.

The garage gates were up—does that mean it’s free?

No. When gates are up, only valid garage permit holders may park.
Visitor parking is not available

I entered when the gates were up, but now they’re down. How do I exit?

Press the “Lost Ticket” button at the gate and follow prompts. A $30 fee applies.

License Plate Recognition (LPR)

What is LPR?

License Plate Recognition uses your license plate to determine compliance with regulations; nearly all permits are virtual, and your license plate is your permit identifier—no physical hangtag required.
Your rear plate must be visible; do not back in or pull through if you don’t have a front plate.

My car doesn’t have plates yet. How do I register it?

When a vehicle is in-transit or has temporary paper plates, the VIN (vehicle identification number) is used in its place. In the parking portal, please input the last 8 of your VIN as your license plate when registering your vehicle, buying a permit or adding the vehicle to your valid permit. Then please provide the complete VIN by calling our office at 402-472-1800.
Update your plate information as soon as you receive it.

In Passport, use the last 8 digits of your VIN as your plate number.

I entered my plate wrong and got a ticket. What should I do?

Contact Parking and Transit at unlpts@unl.edu or 402-472-1800, or appeal online with the correct plate info.

Why do I have to register my vehicle if I only use meters or Passport?

Vehicle registration helps us contact you in emergencies.
Failure to register may result in a $50 fine, which may be reduced to a warning if you register within 14 days.

Where can I park with my permit on game days?

Permit holders with an event sticker may park in:

  • Area A Boathouse (1000 N 16th Street)
  • Area A Business Services (1700 Y Street)
  • Perimeter Lot (1600 Court Street)

I registered my vehicle online. Can I park now?
